UAE Labour: Domestic Workers above 60 years old (retirement age) can renew work visa and continue to work
If you are an employee working in your home country, it’s likely that you will retire at the age of 60 years or older. There are companies that follow this standard for many reasons. First, those employers don’t want to hire employees who can only slow down their productivity and efficiency. Second, those companies believe that they can be more profitable with the help of younger generations.
What does the MOHRE say about domestic workers who are over 60 years?
According to a statement by the Ministry of Human Resource and Emiratisation (MOHRE) said, a domestic worker who is more than 60 years old can keep on working in the UAE if he/she meets the following standards:
- The domestic worker should be physically fit according to the medical certificate issued to him/her by the government authorities of the UAE.
- The government authorities must approve the continuation of his/her employment in the country.
- The medical costs must be paid by his/her employer.
MOHRE additionally said that his provision is only applicable to domestic workers who are currently hired in the UAE. Also, their contracts should have expired for not more than 3 months before they qualify. If this is not me, the domestic worker will not be able to continue his/her employment in the UAE.
It is important to note that these conditions should be met for your employment. If any of these are not available, you won’t be fit to continue working in the country.
What’s the purpose of this new rule?
The main purpose of applying this law is to give families and employers in the UAE the chance to keep their domestic workers for a longer period of time. So long as the employers think that the work is not affected by the age of the worker, then they can continue to employ their helpers. The workers must also comply with the requirements.
Also, keep in mind that these are not applicable to other workers or sailors who need special approval for MOHRE. If you think you need to talk about this with the ministry, do not hesitate to contact them for clarification.
This is such great news for employees who want to continue their employment in the UAE. If you think you qualify or you have families and relatives in the UAE whom you think will benefit from this new rule, don’t forget to share this with them.
